2012 Floral Design Class Schedule

Join us at Helen Olivia Flowers in Old Town for floral design classes. Each workshop has a different theme and students of all skills levels (even those with no experience) will learn something useful. Class sizes are small so there is opportunity for individual attention.

Payment in full is required to reserve a place in the class. However, you are always welcome to put your name on the waiting list for no charge.

Workshops are held at Helen Olivia's retail location at 128 N. Pitt Street in Old Town Alexandria.

Contemporary Cool - Waiting List Only Wednesday, June 6 -- 7 p.m.

In this class, we will create two arrangements each of which will be a dramatic statement using only a few elements. In one of the designs the elements will be manipulated to defy the laws of nature.

Tropical TreasuresSaturday, June 16 -- 4 p.m.

Explore the triumphs and challenges of these showy blooms as we make two arrangements. Tropical blooms tend toward large showy flowers with thick stems which demand techniques to create secure arrangements.

Modern Design - Only 1 spot left! Wednesday, July 11 -- 7 p.m.

Create two modern arrangements that will make heads turn. Students will learn the tricks to achieving gravity-defying leaning arrangements, and will create a “blooming” tree using orchids and branches.

Three-Sided Large Scale ArrangementSaturday, July 21 -- 4 pm.
$95
Traditional triangular arrangements can be ideal for use in churches, sympathy design and events. Learn to create a balanced, harmonious design in one stunning three sided arrangement.

Bridal Bouquet: Hand-TiedWednesday, July 25 -- 7 p.m.
$100
While creating a gorgeous hand-tied bridal bouquet, students will learn to prepare the flowers,
secure the bouquet, and finish the bouquet with a ribbon.

Skills I: The Basics Waiting list only!
Saturday, August 4 -- 4 p.m.

In this workshop, the first hour will be spent discussing and reviewing hand-outs regarding conditioning and care of cut flowers, seasonal availability of flowers, how flowers get from farm to shop and tips to reviewing freshness and quality of flowers. In the second half of the hour, students will create one of our well-known arrangements in a 4" glass square -- an easy go-to arrangement for any occasion.

Glory of the Garden Only 1 spot left! Wednesday, August 8 -- 7 p.m.

Learn to design flowers using a pin frog (Kenzan) so you always have a tool to create a beautiful centerpiece with blooms from your garden. Then make a second medium height arrangement with elements you may be able to find right outside your door. We will discuss what flowers to cut and which ones to leave on the bush as well as ways to think outside the box in reference to filler and accent greenery.

Learn two simple designs for easy entertaining. These two designs will make your guests say “wow”
while you hardly broke a sweat. The two creations will be taken home by students so plan a party to show off your work!

Color My World Waiting list only! Wednesday, August 29 -- 7 p.m. $95
In this popular class, we learn about the power of color, comparing an arrangement mixing colors to one with a monochromatic palette. Students will create these two arrangements and will take each of their creations home in a continued study of the power of color.

Fall Wreath: DriedWednesday, September 5 -- 7 p.m.

Workshop participants will create a beautiful a fall wreath with a grapevine base, dried elements, and a complementing ribbon.

Fruit and Flowers - Waiting list only! Saturday, September 15 -- 4 p.m.

Combine the interesting shades and shapes of fruit and vegetables with gorgeous blooms. This class is perfect for fall, for it really feels like the county of the harvest. We will create two designs both ideal for centerpieces.

Dried Arrangement: FallWednesday, Sept 26 -- 7 p.m.
$95
In this workshop, students will use dried flowers and pods to create a long-lasting display for the home. A medium height arrangement will be created in the earthy tones of fall.

Haute HalloweenSaturday, October 27 -- 4 p.m.

Have some Halloween fun with two holiday designs. Create a stunning arrangement in a pumpkin that could also be repeated for Thanksgiving. Then make a spooky array utilizing orange blooms, black floral paint and ribbon.

Terrific TabletopsWednesday, November 14 -- 7 p.m.
$95
In this class students will create two arrangements. First, we will create a long and low arrangement, ideal for a dining room table. Non-floral elements will be mixed with stunning blooms to create a traditional centerpiece. Secondly, we will mix floating candles with loose blooms to add romantic light to your next dinner party.

Learn how to assemble a beautiful bow from our famous selection of ribbon. One wide, wired bow perfect for a wreath (spring or holiday) will be created in each of these workshops.

Registration in any workshop may be cancelled up to 5 days prior to the workshop for a full refund. After that time, refund is based on the ability to fill the spot in the workshop.
